I have an opportunity to pick up a 90 or 91 MPV for the best price, just the gas to haul it out of there. I have driven these before, but that was back when they were just a couple years old, so don't remember them very well.
Are these a decent vehicle? I know they are based off a car platform, but it's a rear drive v6 car platform.
Would this van thing be comparable to an Aerostar in load capacities and mannerisms? It would most likely be put to use as a daily driver, with occasional light hauling, replacing a tired Courier.
Well, turns out it's a 92, and it's loaded. Power everything, working a/c, automatic leveling rear suspension, seating for 8, and a pretty nice stock sound system.
The engine is extremely smooth, no idea on reliability yet but I just got it yesterday.
No, it's all Mazda, based off the 929 car platform. Ford took control of Mazda in the late 80s, but they still had a lot of creative control. It wasn't until about 94 that Ford really took over a lot of their design work.
So far, so good. I think these things are a testament to the build quality that Mazda was capable of. The compressor for the auto leveling system isn't kicking on, I just haven't had the time to figure it out yet, but I will most likely have to modify the system to avoid spending big $$$ on it.
Having driven a lot of high-end cars, I think Mazda should have also done a wagon off this chassis. A mid size rear drive wagon, responsive but smooth suspension, well appointed, it would have competed very well against the BMW 5-series and the like.
