Hi there. I am wondering about the MPGs of the 2.3l inline 4 in a Ford Ranger. I am thinking about getting a ranger with the inline 4 and 5 speed as my next vehicle. Hopefully, it gets better mileage then my '94 s10
I have a 2.5L but its about the same thing as the 2.3 just a little bigger. Mine is more variable (I also check my mileage with every tankful, it might be a little OCD but its easy to do). City driving here in Kansas I get about 21ish, back home in country driving I average 26ish, and on the flat highways (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois) I get 30ish, the hilly highways of Missouri and Kansas that drops down to 25 cause the 4cyl is a little lack luster in torque to get over the hills, have to down shift to 4th to maintain speed. Winter driving all those numbers drop by about 3mpg. Your mileage is going to really depend on your driving habits and location. If I were able to be a little less aggressive (less flooring, maintaining distance and speed, and obeying the speed limits) I could probably get better mileage out of it.
tak I drive a 2005 XL 2.3 with 5 speed 180 mile round trip each work day and the mileage varies between 24 in the winter with lights, wipers and heater going to as high as 36 in the summer daylight. The last few tanks have all been 32 plus. This is freeway at 60mph. A friend just bought a new toy car and brags about 39/41 mpg we went to town and he had to start on a steep hill and really had to slip the clutch to get going. I have stopped my truck on that same hill a number of times with no issues. Glad I was riding with him, I was thinking of getting a car due to the cost of gas but now I will stick with my Ranger. The 4 cyl is no power house but gets the job done. I also get 26 towing a 14 foot boat.
I get 25 all the time with my 2.3 reg cab ranger. Its an automatic 2 wd. I love this little truck. An the best part I expect to keep it 250,000 miles or more. These Rangers are a very durable long lasting truck. I know several that have went that far an are still going strong. Good Luck an I think you will like the Ranger I love mine.
I do not know the difference between the Lima of the 2.5l. I know the 2005 2.3l has a timing chain verses a belt but I do not know what the difference between the new 2.3l and the previous 2.3l. I did stop and look at a new XL but it had 4:10 gears and I would like to hear actual mileage with 4:10’s.I am running 3:73’s,
My '94 regular cab 2.3 5-speed (bought in March, replaced an '88 F150) gets consistantly between 23 and 25 mpg, and has seen as high as 28 mpg (one tankful, highway driving only). It is a bit on the underpowered side, but the mileage factor is the reason I got it, so in my book it's a reasonable trade-off. I drive it daily to my job in town, but it also sees "farm truck" use, within its limits, of course. The F150 got around 15-17 mpg, and was a good truck that I hated to see go. But time (and rust!) had pretty much decided that it was time to trade. I was actually looking for a newer F-150 to replace it when I came across the Ranger. Price was right and so I made the deal, and could'nt be happier. Great little truck, and I expect I'll hang on to it for years to come.
