Hi,
I have a 98 Expedition with a 5.4. Yesterday was trying to pull a stump out and no 4WD, it worked just fine all last winter. I tried in all modes, A4WD, 4WD hi and 4WD low, the result was no 4WD indicators on the dash and no front will spin.
I have spent a long time reading through the threads and in most cases the dash indicators operated properly and the resulting problems have been with the vacuum lines or the transfer case relays / motor.
After looking at the schematic from Alldata I suspect the GEM, but I am not sure if the GEM illuminates the proper dash indicator based on the selector switch position or the actual position of the transfer case motor. I did remove the selector switch and all 4 positions have the proper resistance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
First things first, check for vaccum. I'm haveing the same problem with my 98 expy. And here's what I know so far. There are 2 solenoids on the right side of the firewall right behind the battery. And you can start checking for vac. at the front diff.. If no vaccum then there is either a broken line or one of the solenoids are bad. Now what I forget to mention is you can check the gem real easily as well. Just simply crawl under the truck with it in 2wd mode a in park and turn the front drivecshaft by had. And then select 4wd and if you cann't spin the driveshaft then you know the gem and everything with the t-case is working properly. If not then you know the gem or the shift motor are the problem. Now what I don't know is which of the 2 solenoids are for 2wd, and which one is for 4wd. I also know that the solenoids are about $70 at Ford.

Thank you paredneck33 for your suggestions. I looked at all the vacuum system and everything looked great. I was able to fix the problem by just disconnecting the battery for about ten minutes! I read the threads a lot and it seams that people are always commenting on try disconnecting the battery, so I tried it and it worked. From now on that will be the first thing I try with any problem. Thanks again for your help.
First, and the most important tip, is engage your 4wd all year round. My buddy is way smarter than I am, and he said that is the biggest mistake people make. Every week they should be put into 4 to keep the shift motor and forks moving, so they don't freeze up. I had to climp up under mine and soak it with penetrant and whack on it about 6 times until it finally broke free. Now if your not getting lights on the dash, different problem. Just my two cents.
