So I've owned my Super Duty for over a year. Love it even with these insane fuel prices. So my question is can I fill my tank while the engine is running safely? I was filling up and a Fed Ex panel truck was filling up next to me but it was still running. It's 100 outside and being able to keep it running with the AC running will go a ways to keeping my 2 year old and wife happy.
hi, i am sure someone will say it's dangerous, but i think it's not that big a deal. btw i have 3 v10's and i shut 'em off cause i can't get the tank full with it ideling haha !!! bseg barry
Well not only do the pumps here say "shut vehicle off before fueling" they now say "must be licensed driver" as well I personally shut mine off, though have been known to occasionally leave it running.
Gas has a lower flash point than diesel. The main reason for shutting off your engine is to keep from igniting fumes while filling. That is also the big thing behind not getting back in while filling cause static electricity can ignite gas. You are good to go with diesel. If it is illegal....I have never heard of it ever being enforced.
I've heard that it uses 5 minutes worth of fuel to start a diesel, which is why it's better to let it idle. I've never seen a scientific study that proves this.
I leave my diesel running in the winter to keep it warm, or in the summer to keep it cool. Diesel fuel is much harder to ignite than gasoline. I would never worry about running one while filling up. I do get quite a few dirtly looks from people with cars filling up that don't know any better though.
I always shut off my gas engine vehicles when filling up. Ever since I caught a pushmower on fire filling it up when I was younger.

You mean I'm not the only one that torched a lawnmower ?
I am living walking proof you can leave your motor running, talk on a cell phone, smoke a cigarette, and get in and out of the vehicle all while getting gas and still be alright
Only recommendation, don't use your lighter to see how much gas you have in motorcycle gas tank... I aint never done that one but saw some idiot on the internet that did!

Lol I was messin with the fuel switch on my quad at work one day and got gas on my hands. I thought I had dried them off good enough but I went to light a cigarette and up went my hand in a flame.
