C4 Fluid Level Increasing when Engine off

Hi,

I have a '67 C4 that has been rebuilt. I installed it in the vehicle and noticed it was leaking fluid from where the shift linkage goes into the trans. I then checked the fluid level (engine off) and found it was WAY over filled on the dipstick. In fact, the fluid was 3-4 inches up the dipstick tube. I started the engine and the level dropped to below the "add" mark. I shut the engine off, and in 30 minutes, the fluid level had risen 3 inches. This is a conversion kit to put a C4 behind a Y block and the engine and trans are on a bare frame. I have tested the trans and it shifts through the gears ok.

What could the problem be?

Thanks,

Dave

you do not have a problem! except that you need to put more fluid in the transmission, every automatic transmission is checked with the engine running, centrifugal force of the engine puts the fluid to its proper level.

Yeah but i'm leaking fluid where the shift linkage goes into the case. I thought this was because the fluid level was too high when the engine was off. Are you saying the fluid level should be this high and the problem is a leaking seal at the shift linkage? How hard is that to fix?

Thanks for your help.

NO!
You must observe these two rules.
#1: Check the engine oil level with the engine OFF.
#2: Check automatic transmission fluid level with the engine ON.

To check the automatic transmission fluid you start the engine, shift through the gears and while the engine is running, trans in park, pull the dip stick and check the fluid level.

Then, if the fluid is below the add line, *** a little until it is in the full cold, or in the crosshatch area when the trans and engine are warm.

The fluid in the torque converter can drain back into the pan when the engine is off.

The shifter seal is easy to screw up as an internal part of the shifter linkage can be knocked off requiring the pan to be dropped to fix.
