a way to make it shift differently?

so lately, i've noticed that my tranny has been acting a little weird...

when i go to pass some one, i'll step on it, so i get those awsome cool high rpms. accept that lately, it will jump up to like 4800, and instead of wraping out that gear for while, it will shift down from say 2nd to 3rd then quickly to 4th OD... which results in me not getting past what i was passing very well, unless i cram my foot all the way into the pedal, and then some. then it jumps back up to the high rpms and stays there, mostly...

on a side note i drove all the way to cape look out state park last week (the week of the 7-11) and even going up hill i was in OD most of the way... i thought that was pretty cool. lots of tourqe = good for up hill driving.

whats up w that??

oh and pablo, if you decide you want to go back to auto, i'll take all your standard stuff off your hands

first, be sure kick-down cabe is ajusted well.

to make tranny shift differently you can change weight in governor to smaller, take vac. modulator apart, install other spring... But first you will get - worth fuel milage.

Why? stock vulcans for trucks have low end torq. and they have no enought perfomance at 4000 rpm. Yes, perfomance cams are available (I have perfomance camshaft), but its torq/rpm curve is not optimal for auto. having 5r55e you can reparametrize shift points table in PCM (you need Ford VCT full set, I have, you not unfortunatly) ore you can get tranny computer available on market for all 4st, 5 st and 6st autos.... easily makes 5r44e of 4r44e (5st is a software thing). But you have a4ld and changing shift points is like a game with weights and springs. It is fully emperical way...

About auto... I drive '01 ranger with 5r55e and wanna get Taurus 3.8 next week....

The tranny has a vacuum hose going to the vac modulator this is some of the shifting control. If the diapham goes bad it won't work and may suck tranny fluid into the engine..

I'm not sure about US market but I can easilly get Tranny computer here, change valve body of A4LD (to have OD and 2-nd and 3rd gears solenoids) and to have tranny with tunable shift points. These copmputers work better with OBD-II trucks becouse they use OBD-II data to "know" thrust position, engine load and RPM....

BTW, modern trucks now have tranny controll units as separate unit, usually installed on tranny.

It allows to have ruther flexible tranny programs with different shift points.

Funny, the Aerostar went to an integrated computer system that combines engine and transmission control functions in the later model years. That was supposed to provide better control of the transmission when the computer knew exactly what the engine was doing all the time. Of course, that does make it more difficult to hack.

Not really, it becomes much easier to change. They first made that change in 1995 pre OBD-II. Those models do require chips to make them learn new shift strategies. in mid '95, they introduced the first generation OBD-II computers, which can be reprogrammed or flashed. These units can be completely changed with nothing more than a special tuner module. While you are at it, you can tweak the factory computer settings for more performance under various conditions, or to use a different octane fuel.

But there are aftermarket tranny computers. You disconnect your tranny wiring from PCM and connect to tranny comp. You connect tranny comp to PCM via ODB-II and like a common obd-II scanner it gets OBD-II data (engine parameters). Tranny codes do not appeare becouse this tranny computer immitates tranny and no codes.

If Jean Sam Duck would have met up with Jon Claud Van Goose he could have paid less for his Aerostar. I can't believe he got ripped off. For shame

I'm with XLT. Please Mr. Moderator--"REMOVE THIS CRAP!"

Hey wait a minute. This knuckle head got more replies than I did when I posted my Modulator hose info!?!?

Its all good in the hood though. Its all about contributing RIGHT? At least I'm doing my share.

Hey great info everyone. I have a 97 aero 3.0L with the electronic tranny. Right now it has a 4.10 rear and I want to put a 3.23 or thereabouts in it to get better gas mileage. But I'm worried it'll screw up my transmission shift points and engine management etc. Any ideas if it really would screw up the shift points/engine management or would the computer automatically compensate for this? And if not, how do I modify it or get one of these programmable transmission computers that Pablo's talking about in order to set it up correctly?

i THINK i found out why it was acting weird. i got home tonight, and the exhaust sounded like a i had a cam in my block. look underneith, and SHAZAM the muffler was BARELY haning on to the pipe between the flex pipe and the muffler. so low back pressure could DEF. be the cause of the weird shifting

I'm pretty sure you can have the PCU tweaked via a tuner. Yours will be
EEC V I believe. Should also be able to sort out your Odometer/speedo at the same time.
