I was wondering if I was the only one this happened to. The 283 in the 51 had no compression. Me and dad worked on it about a months and never got anywhere. A couple weeks ago we pushed it into the garage and started disassembly. I took the hood, radiator, headers, inatke, carb and distributor out. I unbolted the mounts and pulled the old motor old. It was the easiest engine pull I have ever done. It was like it wanted to jump out. I had a 350 in an old junk 63 C-10 that ran. I cleaned up the motor and tried to put it in the 51. I have almost got the motor in but it needs to go back about 1/2 an inch. It's like the trucks saying that it won't have anther inferior engine in it again.
it is kinda funny. I would rather put a ford motor in it but dad owns half the truck and it was setup for a sbc so thats what has to go back in it according to dad
He did say darkside question........ which means pure Ford beware
Does it need the 1/2 inch to set on the engine mounts....or will it not get closer than 1/2 inch to the bell housing?
283 and 350 share the same block so dimensionally they are the same. Maybe catching on the alignment dowels between the engine and the bell housing......that would be about 1/2 inch.... Torque convertor all the way back on the tranny shaft???? Since it should have bolts, vice nuts and studs, holding the torque convertor to the flexplate that shouldn't be the problem........hhhmmm
Stay with the SBC as the truck is setup for it...... unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket and time to kill
What transmission does it have? If it’s an auto, the torque convertor must be installed into the front pump on the transmission first and then bolted to the flex plate. It is possible to install the engine without the front pump correctly aligned but she won’t move. If is a standard, the trans input shaft is not correctly aligned into the pilot bushing.
