bout to do the same on mine..change the gasket...i have a 3" body lift..so it doesnt look like i need to mess with jackin the motor..everything seems pretty clear under there. my question....rtv seal or just some vasline to hold the gasket?
thx
Just as ranger429 said. A body lift would not change the distance between the crossmember and the oil pan. You will need the rtv to hold the gasket in place for installation. Don't overtighten your bolts. If they are too tight then your gasket will push out the sides rendering it useless.
yea, sorry should have been more clear...the body lift just makes it easier for me to work on...also there is plenty of clearance between my crossmember and the pan...think it is a front sump..cant remember off top of my head. thanks for the help
I changed the gasket on my truck this last weekend and got a couple tips from my dad.
1. Obviously make sure everything is clean. Brake cleaner.
2. Use 3M weather striping on the block. It's a gooey yellow stuff that you can pick up from Napa, Autozone, Checker, etc.
3. Stick the gasket to the weather striping. (I had the option of a rubber gasket or the cork gasket. I would recommend the rubber gasket.) It will setup fast so don't waste much time after you put the weather striping on. You'll have 3 or 4 minutes.
4. Use a small bead of Permatex gasket maker on the bottom side of the gasket.
5. Put the oil pan back up and bolt it down.
This was my first time and it went smoothly. I also changed my rear main seal. My dad warned me that some could be real stubborn but mine came out real easy and the new one went in fine.
I didn't have to pull the motor or lift it at all. 390. My cross member ran just in front of my oil pan and the pan came out without any clearance issues.
