Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are of a bad TPS. I've noticed that when I gently step on the throttle the truck seems to act like it is misfiring. Once I get the truck up past 2000 RPM's everything is smooth as can be. If I stomp on it doing 55 the truck will hesitate and act like it is misfiring then all of a sudden it will come out of it and go like hell. Any ideas. 5.4L 3V 04 Screw FX4.
There have been a couple threads about that kind of hesitation and even a TSB about it. If you do a search you might be able to find some info. I just brought my truck in for a few other things and mentioned it and they said they re-flashed the PCM and since then it's been gone. Some have said it comes back though.
I am having the same problem. At 1800 rpm there is vibration and the motor seems to be losing power. The truck has been in the shop. They checked everything. No codes show up. I took the service advisor for a ride, he says it is drone from the muffler. So i put on dual exhaust, does the same thing.
Just yesterday it did the same thing at 1100 rpm. I am going to examine the TPS myself.
I cleaned all the contact points in the coil packs. And the contacts on the wiring connector as well. Switched them around as well. Made no difference. Is there any way to check if the coil is bad?
could be an injector too...i don't have the resistance readings you should get on the COPS here at home...someone else will chime in, or you could do a search. I've seen it on here before. Could be your fuel filter also. it could be a lot of things, but it's not your TPS.
To the original question: If a TPS is bad, or going bad, you will get no throttle response, or way more than you want when you barely step on it. Usually more along the lines of nothingness.

A dirty TPS (failing TPS) gives EXACTLY the symptoms that the original poster's truck exhibits. Since Ford's TPS is not able to be disassembled and cleaned, replace it. It's an easy job and the TPS isb relatively cheap.
Does a bad TPS cause the truck to surge when under a load. My 5.4-3V has done it intermitantly since it was new when I back a trailer and/ or load up a hill.
