oil preasure guage question

oil preasure guage question
Hey there,
I was driving my truck when i noticed the guage dropped. way past low.
I stopped the engine, checked the oil, it was down about 1 and a half quarts.
started the truck again, truck is still running smooth. The needle would go to normal and then periodically bottom out. Since i was on a main highway i slowly drove to the next cuttoff, listening for the tell tale lifter noise or engine knock. nothing. Drove it for a half an hour all the way to a service station. Still fine. Do these preasure switches fail? Where would it be and how would i test it. My manual has squat on the subject
any help would be appreciated
