hey guys, got a tow today for the first time. Truck wouldnt restart. I thought the battery was dead. Tried to get a boost and the starter wouldnt turn. hooked up a fresh spare battery to the cables leading to the engine, no change. Battery reads 13 volts at the solenoidSolenoid does work, i hear a click at the starter but at best i get a slight turn, then nothing. It has warned me last week. the starter turned very slowly, the engine started.
Now nothing.
going to visit my gal this sunday, hope to get her running this weekend.
Sounds like you need your starter checked, but first remove and clean the battery cable ends (both ends of each cable) and the things they connect to (i.e. battery posts, starter, and ground on truck). I had the same problem once and spent all the time it took to remove the starter and take it down to have it rebuilt. The guy checked it first and said there was nothing wrong with my starter. He told me to clean all connections first and see what that did. Guess what, took a wire brush to everything, put it back together and problem solved. So always clean connections first and then proceed with doing harder/more costly work.
If cleaning doesn't help then go get the starter checked. Autozone does it for free.
qman is right- there's a small (14-16 gauge) that goes to the starter and attaches by a 1/4" spade terminal. Many starters have been replaced only because of a bad connection there.
Most aftermarket rebuilt starters actually have a wire attached better with a pigtail that you splice into your existing wiring harness as a fix for this.
Yea the guy that designed that should be on call to immediately drop what he's doing, drop in at a moments notice and wiggle that stupid thing every time one of our trucks won't start because of it!
Put a slip on type connector on a starter, under a truck where it will get wet, what a idiot.
Never should have changed it from the old tried and true setup they once had on em.
I had the same problem two weeks ago. Wound up replacing the starter relay above
the right wheel well and cleaned connections. No change. Crawled under her and
removed the starter. There are two #10 torx bolts securing the solenoid to the starter
housing, they had worked loose and the solenoid was moving around and not throwing
the starter gear into the flywheel. Tightened up both bolts, did the steel wire brush
trick, the starter was dirty and all is well now. Cranks like a striped ape. Check it off
the vehicle, might be a simple fix too. Good luck.
spade connector was bad, starter was toast. I had it tested. changed it in about 10 minutes. Starters arent as heavy as they used to be.
truck is starting like a champ.
thanks guys
