Here's the problem...i went to install the engine today and found out the the oil pan is the wrong one (front sump) oh and by the way the engine that i have is a 351W, and correct me if i am wrong it is the same block as a 302 right? So beings how i have the wrong oil pan i ventured to the ol' junk yard to get a rear sump off of a 351W from a van, i went to put it on and the damn thing won't fit.....i really need to get this thing goin and thought i was close, can anyone please give me some info on what i should do next, plllllllleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaasssssssseeeeeeeee.....
the oil pan hits the cross member on the truck when i drop it in, so i went to the junk yard to get a rear sump hoping it would resolve the issue but the oil pan i got wouldn't even attempt to fit....the bolt pattern is the same but the front and rear main seals are different on the pan, and the pick up tube is longer, i was also noticing that the oil pump on the pan that i got off the van has a way smaller oil pump too.
If you've swapping out a 302 for a 351 you'll need a 351w F250 oil pan, a 351w F250 oil pump, a rear sump oil pick-up, and a main cap bolt with a stud to which you can secure the pick-up tube. I just went through it with my engine. The high volume oil pump I bought wouldn't clear the pan...
what did the 351w you are swapping into your truck come out of? I put a 85 351w H.O. out of a bronco into my 78 f100,didn't have to do anything to the oil pan. I know I should have because it was a junk yard motor, but i didn't even take the pan off when I put the engine in the truck, just cleaned it up,and put it in the truck because I was in a hurry and needed the truck back on the road. that was 4 years ago,and the motor still runs great!! I guess I typed all of that to say that an oil pan out of a 351w bronco should also work.

That's a 302 pan.. make sure you get a 351 pan and pickup. Do you know how to tell the difference between these motors?
well i do know that the markings on the block for the 351W is C9ODE....can you post some pics of a rear sump 351W pan and pick up so i have an idea and any other pertitant info i may be missing?????thank you.
Those casting numbers won't tell you what block you are looking at. There are several ways to spot a 351....
The intake is wider.. about 11" across versus about 7" for the 302.
The timing cover water passages are about 1" below the head gaskets on a 5.8, they are flush on the 302.
The base of the distrbutor is about 1" below the intake gasket surface on the 5.8, it is flush on the 302.
K....so do either of these pictures tell you my problem, if you look at baron's motor and mine, they are identical to each other, other than the oil pan....know i need to get that oil pan, and the oil pump along with the pick up tube, and have no idea what year to get them out of....so i guess that's the next question, what year truck had a 351W in it with rear sump and the tube and oil pump i need
