Electrical Short

1890 F-150 Lariat

I think I have an electrical short somewhere in the electric window connection or controls. When I open or close the drivers side door from inside the truck, I sometimes touch an exposed screw on the doors arm rest inside the handle you use to close it. When I touch this screw, I feel a small electrical current. This occurs even when the truck is turned off and the keys are out of the ignition.

I am worried that this may be shorting out other parts on the truck. Should I worry about it? Any ideas from anyone would be great.

Thx
Randall

Randallc, maybe you are a human voltmeter! Are you sure it is not static electricity you are feeling. With the key out, there shouldn't be any current flowing. Try running a ground wire from the door to the door jam.

Randall,

Do you have a Multimeter? Or can borrow one? Also, do the windows and power locks function correctly? I do not see how you could be getting a shock from 12VDC.

This may sound far fetched but,...... I work as a RADAR Tech for the FAA and am working around "Joltage" regularly. I have in the past touched something metal as you have and thought I felt a shock only to find out that the piece I touched had a sharp point or burr of metal on it and I stuck myself. It felt just like a small electric shock.

If you can get a meter put the red lead on the screw and the black lead on the bare frame somewhere. Let us know what ya find.

Veeeery interesting!

Well, I can tell you for sure that it is not a static shock. It is a definite low voltage steady current that is there until I step out from the truck. I guess I am grounding somthing when I get out of the truck or somthing. I really do not know. All I know is that it is there and I think it may be my power window wires shorting out on somthing. To answer your question, yes my power windows are working. Very strange, I think I am going to pull my door panel off to take a closer look at it.

Thx
