Engine Swap

I have a 2000 Ford F-150 with the 5.4 liter engine, i have been having several issues with exhaust leak, misfires, and now the head gaskets are leaking. I bought the truck with 100,000 miles on it for pretty cheap and i am at 117,000 and have already replaced the transmission and intake manifold. The mechanic which is my future brother in law says the heads are warped, so that it would cost a good amount to replace them. So i have been trying to find a low mileage motor to replace it so i can hopefully get away from these problems because i cant sell it and i would take a serious beating on a trade in. I cant find a low mileage motor for my year of pickup everything i found has even more, i didnt know if it would be possible to move up to the newer motors from 02 up, i understand a lot of things would have to be changed im more looking at if it is feasibly possible and what exactly it would take.

You can get a set of heads off the net for around $1200, at least a few months ago thats what they sold for. Looks like they are still that cheap:

Can't beat that when the cheapest reman will be $2500

Unless it comes down to not being able to afford a reman...look what you get...

basically a new motor that should last 100,000 miles or more...

you already fixed the transmission...take a good hard look at the rest of the truck

if you really like the truck and can live with it for 5 more years or more....get the reman.

if you can afford to park it for a couple weeks or so, you should be able to find a used motor...

but it will prolly have 70-80k unless you are really lucky.

Are they warped enough that they cannot be machined flat? Most of the time you can machine them flat.. unless they are warped too much.

He can't say for sure since hasn't torn it apart yet....kind of waiting on me to make a decision on what i want to do, he figures i would would have to be having a good day for them to be able to be milled. I also would rather not spend one more dime on that truck since it seems like all it has been is trouble. If i could afford it i would trade it off, and yeah a reman would be cheaper than a payment but im still stuck with that thing for several more years with all the money ive been tying up in it. I am a diehard Ford fan, but it seems i have bad luck with them...i had a mustang gt that i wrecked twice and this truck which ive had several problems with all during this time my dad had a 98 Ford f150 go 225,000 miles with only replacing starter, alternator, flywheel, and rear end, he sold it and it still runs just fine. I dont need the pickup right now, i have my 77 f250 that gets 6 miles to the gallon if i need to do anything im just trying to weigh my options.

You can get a set of new, fully assembled heads from Ford Motorsport for about 700 dollars.
