428 block
428 block
Hi there im new to this forum i mostly hang around the 73-79 forum but anyways i had a question as to my block i have its a 428 block i was out drivin it one day and it threw two rods on me and it cracked the block the crank was fine but had been turned alot so we had the machine shop put metal back on it so now its good but it did crack the block in the two cylinders that the rods went in there was antifreeze in the oil the bore on it is .060 can i save the block or should i punch out the 352 that i have layin around this motor was in a 76 highboy when it went we pulled it and found a 352 and put in it for a temporary motor got a 390 and rebult that that is what is in there now it runs real strong so i want to know is there any way to save this old block it isnt a cobra jet it does have the A on the back of the block so i know its a 428 also how big of a deal is it to make a 410 out of that 352 the flywheel that was on the 428 was cracked so we had to chuck that we tried to see if any of the parts stores had one but they just laughed at us when we told em it was for a 428 the heads were fine even though the pistons smacked em we had them checked at the machine shop we even ran em on the 390 to double check for leaks and all was good
any help would be greatly apreciated
thanks

At .060 the block is just about done. If the other holes are fine no damage or taper you can sleeve the 2 bad holes. Sleeves here run about $100 a hole installed. The condition of the rest of the block would depend on that. You can easily bore the 352 to 4.05 and drop in the 428 crank for a 410. That might be a better plan than using the 428 block.
ok i ask this cause i really dont want to scrap that block cause theres so few actual 428 motors left but if its about done then ill chuck it what else do i need for the 410 and which one would have more power
Oh no don't chuck it!!! If the .060 was a fairly recent overbore and the other cyls are in good shape besides the 2 that need sleeves you can still run the block possibly. It's just at the point at .060 it's at the end of it's natural limits. You might be able to squeak another build out of it. But you'd really need to have the shop mag for cracks and sonic map it. At $100 a sleeve it's not cost effective to do all 8. But I'd certainly do a few if that's all it needed. If it's not meant to be then you can bore the 352 block to 4.05 and make the 410 and go from there. But I'd at least have the 428 checked out to see if there are any options left.
ok the only two i think that were bad were 7 and 3 but i didnt look that close and its not at my house its at my dads but i will be out there this weekend and i will look at the rest of the cylinders to see if they are ok
