Security - Under Dash Starter Disable Switch Part 1
PART 1
I got tired of opening the hood to pull the starter motor relay trigger wire off the starter relay to disable the starter whenever I left my truck unattended. I decided to wire in an under dash toggle switch to open and close the trigger wire. I had all the material except for the switch, which I purchased at Radio Shack. This write up is for 1999 to 2001. 2002 and 2003 do not have a starter relay mounted under the hood but I am sure they have one somewhere, along with a trigger wire. The trigger wire on my 99 goes to the terminal on the starter that has the 8mm nut. That would be a starting point for an 02-03.
The arrow in the below photo points to the starter motor relay trigger wire. This relay is mounted on the passenger side just above the wheel well. This is the wire to cut and connect through a switch. It is the only one that has a boot and just pulls off. I used a toggle switch with a long lever to make it easy to find by feel when mounted under the dash.
Materials I used:
20ft 16 ga wire. (I used 16 ga. blue because that was what I had on hand. The trigger wire is only 18 ga)
Wire conduit, about 8 ft. (I used 3/8 inch, smaller would work, only 2 wires)
Shrink tubing.
Connectors for switch hook up.
12v DC Toggle switch. 5 amp or larger should be fine.
¼ “ bolt ¾” long and nut plus washer to mount switch bracket.
Switch bracket I made from a piece of scrap aluminum bar 1” wide and an 1/8“ thick, and about 4” long. It was easy to drill and bend, while also being rigid enough to do the job.
The object is to cut the trigger wire and splice in a wire to run to a toggle switch mounted under the dash. Then back to the other end of the trigger wire. The toggle switch will allow you to open the trigger wire to disable the starter and to close it again to enable the starter. The following parts/posts have pics and descriptions.
