Hi Guys
I haven't been on in a while. I have a question to run by you. Has anyone tried or thought about tring to convert there V10 to run on Propane? I was looking into it for my Dually. I would like any feed back. My truck works fine now but I am looking to the future and the price of gas. The price of LP is about .50 cheaper than gas.
Frank, I dont think you would save any money, LP Gas may be cheaper, but you wont get as good a mileage with it as you do with regular gas.
LPG doesnt have as much energy in it as gasoline, so you wont get as much power or as good a mileage.
And to convert from MPFi to LPG and install a DOT approved LPG tank would be a nightmare. And I'm not sure about the engine control computer. Plus it would be vary costly, and you have to stop to get LP Gas every 150 miles or so. None of this 400 mi per tank like with gasoline.
I dont think you would be vary happy with it.
Mike.
I have seen some V-10 for sale with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) but a conversion cost $10000 + so even though CNG is about $.93 here, it is hard to justify. Plus it's hard to find a place to fill it up. But a home filling station for about $4000 will let you fill it up at home. CNG has a higher energy content than gasoline so your MPG would not change.
FWIW I buy about 500lbs of LP every winter and it goes up every winter. Paid $60 for 100lbs last winter and I can only imagine what it will be this winter.
Some of the trucks used to pull heavy aircraft around the terminals at a few airports use V10s powered by LPG.
On Monday a large, new, yellow, Blue Bird, school bus passed me with placards on it saying "Powered by clean LPG". Thirsty guy that I was, I pulled along side her and held a canteen to the exhaust pipe. mmmmm that slaked my thirst!
On the flip side I just paid $774 for around 265 gallons of LPG.
Google V10 and LPG you may find what yer looking for.
Thanks guys, I was just kicking around an idea. At that price to convert I will stay with what I have. I don't use my truck evertday so I can go a long way for $10,000. I like the power it has now so if you lose power with lp gas it don't make sence to change. Have a nice day
But would something like that be driveable with a go-pedal?
Acceleration (enriched), coast, etc...
Hmm...
Thats a good question and I honestly don't know. It seems like the generator is made to run a certain rpm and done. After looking at your links, it says the generator operates at 1800rpm, which seems very low to me. Wonder if the manifold and fuel system could be carried over to an over the road V10.
