Noob thread. how do I tell if I have abs

So I bought a used early 99 f350 a couple of months ago and want to know how I find out if it has abs. I called a ford dealer and got some info on it but nothing on whether or not it has abs. The abs light does come on at start up but I've got a late model pcm in the truck instead of the stock one so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
This is a total noob question I know but any info would help me out

Thanks in advance

Bubba

Go out and jam on your brakes in the dirt or mud. But not in traffic. If you feel like you're the dice at the Jolly Green Giant's craps game, you've got it AND it's working!!

I'm pretty sure they all had rear ABS, but I think only the Lariat's got 4wheel ABS

Hmm.. i have an xlt. Im almost positie i have 4 wheel ABS.

If you didnt get the jolly green giant comparison (haha it was very good) then it will also feel like the brake pedal is giving you feedback. Like grinding rocks or somthing. also, the wheels obviously will not lock up.

IF none of this works take your VIN to the dealer and they will tell you.

This MIGHT work - not sure if it tells you about ABS - VIN Number Decoder offer to you by Ford Trucks Enthusiasts | www.ford-trucks.com

The ABS unit is mounted underneath the left side battery. It will have a bunch of brake lines going to it.
If you don't have ABS, there will be an empty space below the battery.

Dan, aren't there lines going to the sensors in the back side of the front hubs also?

Yes. Good catch. That would be an easier way of seeing if you have ABS. Just go look for the black umbilical coming off of the bearing hub for each wheel.

I should have used mine but instead ended up replacing the hubs.

Doh!

I am a believer now though. Getting ready to make a second production run of those very soon.

4 wheel ABS was standard on the 02 model, but a special order item on the 99's. Not sure when it changed, but I had to order it on my 99, and it was standard equip on the 02.

an easy way to tell if you have ABS is to look under truck by the front of the door on the backside of the fender liner. right where the mudflap would go. there is a harness just hanging there. if there is just the plug then you dont have ABS if there is something plugged into the harness, then you have ABS

It's my understanding that all Superduty trucks 99 and up have rear ABS. 4WABS came standard with Lariat and higher trim packages and as a special order item.

Mine have all been XLT models Scott. I don't care for the leather. I ordered my 02 to get all the features I wanted and asked why he didn't give me the option of 4 wheel ABS. The answer was it was standard equipment now.

Right. It did become standard in 02. I meant prior to that. My 01 Lariat has standard 4wabs, but for the trim levels below that it had to be special ordered.
