When the vent control is selected on my 1995 Ranger instead of outside temp air coming in the vent seems to be giving me the same kind of air as if I had the A/C on. It seems to be cooling the outside air. The A/C works fine as does the heater, I'm just wondering if the A/C is not turning off when I select vent. Any ideas?
First I would check to see if the A/C compressor really is or isnt turning when it shouldnt be. With A/C on, check under the hood to see the center of the compressor clutch spin when its engaged. Your system may cycle on-off-on if its not real hot out. Do this just so you know what to look for.
Then move the A/C control to Vent. Check under the hood again. The pulley should be spinning, but not the center of it.
If it is spinning, just like when A/C is on, then 2 possibilities: Electrical problem feeding current to the A/C Clutch when it shouldnt like while in vent position, or air gap in the clutch is too tight and its driving when it shouldnt be.
To check for electrical problems, with engine OFF unplug the electrical connector at the A/C clutch. Then start it up in Vent, and go take a look at the center again. If the Clutch isn't driving it now, then you may have a bad dash switch. But if it still is driving the compressor, even though the electrical clutch feed has been disconnected, then the clutch needs work.
