Is there any rubber/tire treatment that could be used to prevent UV and ozone damage, plus it can protect against the drying out of tires when they see little use, like on a trailer? Or off, and in a plastic bag.
How long are your tires lasting without the treatment? I had a blow out today on a tire about 6 years old that had now sidewall rot visible, but still blew a nice size chuck out of the side.
The tires are from my Bronco (LT235/75R15C), about 5 - 6 years old with about 30% thread left, and I want to put them on a 1740lbs utility trailer so that:
a) I don't need a separate spare for the trailer
b) the trailer will have a similar ground clearance
Since a single tire is rated more (1985 lbs) than the trailer is rated for, I think they should last for quite a while and I don't need to worry much about blowouts, especially since they probably spend ~48 weeks/year in a plastic bag.
The spare tire that matches the truck and trailer is a great idea. Unfortunately, most hubs match a chevy bolt pattern. Have you verified the spare will fit the hub?
It's not always the weight that causes the blow out. I've had more tires fail running a trailer empty (like today) than when they're loaded.
No matter what kind of treatment or storage options, after 5 years from the date of manufacture your tires are on borrowed time and can blow out at any time.
