Right now my rear end is a dana with 4.55 gear ratio. M truck is an 85 with a c6 transmission and a 6.9 diesel.
Whats the best transmission to go with a in ford sterling or dana, and also the best gear ratio. I will be running highways and also sometimes need it with pulling power, and something that wont suck up fuel.
Thanks for tips and advise...I just like for the truck to not have high RPM running on highways
4:55's? Are you sure it isn't 3:55 or 4:10? Those were the common ratios available in the heavy trucks. The diesels usually had the 4:10's while the gassers got the 3:55's.
I run a ZF 5spd, with 4:10's and 33" tires. In 5th gear I am turning 2000rpm at 60mph. It also has the granny 1st gear to get the big loads moving. I dont miss my C6(3000rpm @ 65mph) at all.
Id like to put in the zf5 but I dont know where to find one from a diesel. I have seen a lot from gassers...
What all is involved from switching from auto to manual? I would think there would be a lot of work involved.
If I were to get a different gear ratio would it help my RPM's at high speed? Id like something that still has power to pull a small trailer and not to bad on fuel
Too bad you aren't closer, there have been a couple diesel ZF's in the local craigslist.
The auto to stick swap is really straightforward. If you can change a clutch you can do the swap. I expected things to be a lot more complicated than they were.
If you do a lot of highway driving, I would stick with the 3:55's as they will result in a slightly lower cruising rpm. I changed to 4:10's since 95% of my driving is around town at 60mph or less. I actually got a small increase in mpg with the 4:10's since they dont require as much throttle to get moving.
Get teh motor set up right, and the 3.55's won't be so bad to deal with. I will admit though, my 4.10's will drag nearly anything with the motor set up like it is. Thing is, with the 4 speed, I am limited pretty much to 65-70 if I want the motor to live, and the economy not to suck too bad , it does better around 60-65.
