Well, I finally bought the Walker 21470 muffler. Called the local muffler shop and they said they would remove the old one and install the new one for $50.00. I think it might be worth that so I don't have to mess with it. I REALLY hope this is an improvement.
I got the muffler for 54.56. I mainly read on here that it will help with EGT's, and better flow than stock since it is pretty much a straight through muffler. I have the 6637 and cover for air in and read that I need to help the air out. I don't drive my truck as much as most people do, so I thought this would be my best alternative over the cost of a 4" system. I didn't want to just straight pipe since we do pull with the truck, (scared of my wife) thought it might be a little loud.
The Walker BTM is the same thing I did to my previous 7.3 F250.
The straight thru design dropped my EGTs pretty well, which is mainly why I did it. It is an inexpensive way to deal with EGTs while not buying a whole new system. IIRC, they went down about 150*, which is pretty good for the $$$ you spend on it.
Thanks for the info Mike. I don't have gauges yet so I thought I would try to do this change. Sure am glad to see that it lowers the EGT's. We just bought a 5th wheel and plan on some short trips and I was a little worried w/o gauges, but the 5th wheel is only about 8,000#s.
Just while we're on the topic, there are Walker install instructions specific to the 7.3 that the shop may need.
When I had mine installed, the shop said it would not work because the Walker was too long and existing pipe would not fit it. The instructions clear that up.
I have it in .pdf format, so shoot me a PM with your email if you want me to send it to you.
I did the muffler delete with a piece of straight pipe from a muffler shop. It was not loud at all, you would be surprised. I went to the 4" w/muffler and is louder then the stock wo/muffler.
1st, reps to you Mike, and pm.
2nd, that surprises me Rick. I didn't know how loud the straight pipe would or wouldn't be. Seems that most people that straight piped theirs really liked it, but I was afraid it might be noisy while towing. Point to ponder now that I have this info.
For anyone who has installed the 3.5" Walker BTM or a 4" system with a straight thru muffler, you can get rid of the deep drone by installing a resonator just after the transmission cross brace. I had a drone at 60 - 65 MPH (best towing cruise speed). I installed the 3.5" Walker 21467 and the drone went away. Also after installing the DP tuner (60 HP tow), I got 13.8 mpg vs 12.5 stock at 62 mph, towing my 7000 lb 5th wheel RV. That is 10% less fuel consumption.
Rock Auto sells the Walker products and there is also a 4" resonator. Check out Walker Heavy Duty web site for a complete catalog. If you have a cat, you should not have a drone problem, because the cat acts like a resonator.
Hope this info helps others who want a peaceful ride.
FWIW I just removed my stock pipe with muffler delete and replaced it with a 4" MKO with muffler. I placed the muffler with the louvers facing into the exhaust flow, as this is supposed to be the "quiet" direction. I am extremly happy becase it is much more quiet, but the turbo whistle seems to be more pronounced. The MKO muffler is straight through also like the BTM. Let us know how your BTM works out Dave.
I know this is an old thread but just picked up a walker 21470 from napa today and had the local muffler shop install it. Love the sound... Had the radio off the whole way home. Also was fun to hear it under an underpass from take-off. Nice... Seemed to have a little more power as well. Now I have to figure out what to tell the wife on the new sound......
