I have an 02 Explorer and was wondering if anybody knew of aftermarket differential locks for the model. I do some minor off-roading, but the main reason is come winter time i have a steep hill to make it up and only two out of the 4 tires spin, and to me that usless, so any help would be appreciated.
what you are looking for is a "limit slip" axle. this is a clutch that sets inside the rear axle and keeps both ends mvoing at approx the same rotation speed. They should be available from dealer or afermarket. You dont put one in the front end.... the "locker" axle you are talking about normally "locks" the axle so both tires turn the same speed. that is for off roading only, not a road truck.
They have air lockers for about anything. I've seen them on Mustangs with probably 500+hp and they work. Neat stuff! What's even better is you just flip a switch to lock/unlock them and you can install them front and/or rear.
