electrical problem

I recently acquired a '53 F100, all original (239 flathead V8, 6V, etc.). It runs great except turning on the headlights causes an overload and everything shuts down. Pushing in the light switch restores the power again. Is there a short, bad ground, bad switch, what?

Will the lights work with the engine off(all the lights)? If so, you might have a ground problem from the engine to the sheetmetal. Your truck is positive ground correct?

Yes, it is positive ground and the lights work with the engine off. I'll check the ground. Thanks.
