My Nephew has an 82' F150 4X4 with a 302 with a 4 speed manual and is going to be swapping it out for a 351 windsor that is currenty mated to an automatic. The 351 is coming out of my truck which is a 77' F100. Will he need to change flywheels and if so will the fly wheel from the 302 mount to the 351w? I also wondered if the flywheels are balanced as part of the crank or are they balanced seperately? The 351 was made in '73 according to the orange emissions sticker that was on the driver side valve cover if that makes any difference.
If the 302 uses the "old" firing order it should be 28oz imbalanced and the flywheel could theoretically be used (after resurfacing, natch). If it uses the 351 firing order it's a 50oz imbalance.
If it were me, I'd buy a new flywheel and harmonic balancer for the 351.
From what I was told, the 302 that is in the '82 originally came out of an '88 Lincoln towncar and was fuel injected. It was converted to a carb. before it was transplanted in the truck. So he needs to change the harmonic balancer also? Would the balancer and flywheel from the 302 work on the 351?
So what I have to do is find an early 351 windsor with a manual transmission and take the flywheel and harmonic balancer off of it? Will the flywheel from the early 351 bolt up to a later model manual 4 speed?
will a later model 351 windsor flywheel (or flexplate) for a manual fit my '73 engine? And you said that if I replace the flywheel I would also have to replace the harmonic balancer?
It's confusing I know. Ford likes to make things difficult. The 302 is the problem, so ditch everything off the 302, it's the one that changed balance.
The 351w never changed balance. So you should be able to use most any year, though I would go to Online Auto Parts and Auto Accessories Store at PartsAmerica.com and check part numbers if you have any doubt one year is the same as the other, or one clutch part will fit the other. I know the very early 302's changed the number of bolts in the damper that hold the pulley on, but I am not sure if they also changed the 351w or not. But the balance will be the same for all 351w's
It's not that confusing- Leave the balancer on the 351w. Find a flywheel from ANY 351w or a 302 made before 1981, or just buy a new one that is 28 0z. imbalance. If you want to replace the balancer it is 28 oz. imbalance as well. The only problem you may run into is the # of bolt holes on the balancer. 82 is right around the time Ford went from 28oz to 50oz on the 302. As far as I know- there's no difference in the early or late flywheels on the 351w and any of them should work with your trans. The only problem is getting the right imbalance.
