Stand outside the truck with the key in the on position, do not crank. Turn the switch to 4x4, and listen for the motor sound engaging the transfer case to 4x4. If you don't hear the motor, you may have to pull the motor and check it out. Let us know.
Mine works sometimes, but usually goes to defrost,so i think i have a vacuum leak somewhere.
You could have the same problem as i have, too bad I'm not 100% sure whats up with mine...
When I changed the ball joints on my truck I discovered why my auto lock system had failed. I lost my vent control motor in the dash because I was not able to pull a vacuum. When I took the hub and knuckle apart I found a rusted corroded mess. Some idiot at Ford decided to place the brake dust shield between the two mating surfaces of the hub and knuckle allowing road grime and h2o to get into the hub. Just pull the vacuum hose off the knuckle and place a vacuum pump on it. Pull a vacuum and see if it holds. I tried cleaning the two as best I could but my vacuum only lasted about a month after I put the ball joints on. I need to replace the hub and knuckle to get back to a nice clean surface. The only thing between me and a cooked bearing is a small yellow o-ring.
When you say "some idiot at Ford decided to place the brake dust shield between the two mating surfaces of the hub and the knuckle" what exactly do you mean? The dust shield, at least on my early 99, installs on the studs between the hub and the knuckle, no other way to put it on there.
They should have mounted that shield on the outside of the knuckle and not between the two using the studs. You could put a simple gasket in and keep all the road junk out of the hub. The shield is not a proper mating surface and it doesn’t extend completely in-between the knuckle and the hub. They could have mounted that shield on the outside of the knuckle and kept it out of the way. It just doesn’t make any sense to put that between the two...all that’s going to happen is water and grime is going to get into the system and eat it up.
Okay I get what you are saying now. I agree, probably not the best design but it is what it is. With the torque required for the hub nuts that dust shield is sandwiched in there pretty tight, I wouldn't worry about stuff going through between the hub and knuckle too much.
