I am a proud new owner of a 2008 Ford F250 Power Stroke Diesel with 6K miles as of today. I am new to the forums and have been reading up on the deletion of the particulate filter.
My questions are the following:
1. Can I hollow out my exhausting particulate filter instead of purchasing a delete pipe with same increase in MPG's?
2. If yes to questions 1 how hard is it and is it worth it?

You can, however, you will still need a tuner to reprogram the computer. And do you really want to hollow out a piece that costs over a thousand dollars...you might need it in the future.
You could hollow out the DPF rather than purchasing a delete pipe, but it is just not worth it in my opinion. You would be better off keeping the DPF intact and putting it in a safe place. Should you ever need dealer service or choose to sell your truck it would be wise to have the DPF on the truck, intact and functional.
If you were to ever have to buy a new DPF it would run right around $1,500...
I did not know you had to reprogram the computer? Good point because I may be forced to re-install it down the road due to my county being so strict on emissions control. Do they normally check for delete pipes when a diesel is being inspected?
If you do not buy a programmer that is capable of a DPF delete and just delete the DPF alone, eventually the truck will go into a permenant regen. Once that happens, only reinstalling the DPF or taking it to the dealer will stop the regen.
Where I live there are no vehicle inspections, so I have no clue if your county/state would check yours. Although, things are changing all the time when it comes to emissions and eventually we all probably will have some form of inspection.
Any programmer's you would recommend with this (DPF deletion capability) feature? Are all of the DPF delete pipes pretty much the exact same thing, so find the cheapest one and it should perform as well as any other??
Contact Matt at Spartan Diesel Technologies. He is using a DashDAQ from Drew Tech, with his custom tunes. It's called a Phalanx Flash Console. Comes with 3 custom tunes of your choice, from 40 to 250 extra hp. The power is awesome! You will also need the delete pipe. Also the AFE Stage II Air Intake PG-7 w/Torque Tube if you plan on high hp tunes. I don't think you will find anyone out there that will beat his customer service. He's a great guy to talk with. Just tell him what you plan on doing with your truck, and he'll make recommendations. You may have to call him a few times to get in touch with him, but it will be worth it in the long run. I've got his tunes on my 08 F350 and it runs great. You can set it up to monitor just about anything you want! Check around on some of the other forums if you need additional info, or send me a pm...

If it was originally equipped with one from the factory, and if your state does do emissions testing, they will most certainly check to see if your DPF is still there, and a sooty tailpipe will also tell them that the DPF is not there/non functional
