I have an Edelbrock performer 400 intake on my 400 engine. After sitting this winter and having condensation and some rain dripping from the roof (oohh!) there are some brownish spots on the rough intake casting, which was all nice and shiny new at one time. How do you keep these castings looking new? I am not going to take it off the engine to clean it. What about long term - how do you keep them lookin nice???
I suppose you could try and paint it with a clear coat paint. I ended up painting many of my aluminum intakes with a good automotive paint to match my engines. You don't need a high temp paint just for the engine. Looks much better than the corrosive aluminum.
I suppose one could try some mag wheel etching acid cleaner - the kind meant ONLY for rough cast wheels, but it will likely affect any surrounding painted surfaces and don't let any get on chrome. I have never had much luck keeping them spotless, so I chose to go the painted route like Dirt racer - engine colored (sleeper style).
Another option, which I've been debating, is to have the intake powdercoated. It's a lot longer lasting than rattlecans, but my concern would be heat retention. Powdercoating is a much thicker coat, and would reduce any capability of the aluminum being able to throw off some of the heat from the coolant coursing through it. Granted, that's what a radiator is for, but every little bit helps, I'd think.

DON'T DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought that I'd be smart and paint my performer with high temp clear. Yeah, it stayed clear for about a weak. Now the whole thing is slightly brown, burnt looking.
Suppose I'll tear it off one day and bead blast it, it's just alot of work for minimal gain (visual).
