69' Ford

Hello,
I just want to say first off what a nice place you have here! My name is Tyler and I am 14 years old. I am currently taking Drivers Education this week. Unfortunatly its the class room part . Anyway I came here because I am a Ford Truck enthuisest and have found a 69' Ford truck that happens to be my uncles.

He said he would sell it for $800.... But heres where my questions come in.-

1. The truck is in primer.. But body is in PERFECT shape!
2. Engine is a 240 inline 6... Can it be built for a little more HP?
3. Steering column was cut and the shifter was taken out and who ever installed a floor shifter.(Cheapo Peice) But they installed the shifter and left the bench seat!!! .....
4. Needs a bumper.... Gone missing some how...

So whats it worth? You think $800 is a good deal or should I bargan with him and try to bring it down to what price?

Some more questions-

1. Paint? What would it cost me?
2. New steering column W/O the old in-dash shifter?
3. Bucket Seats? I know I need them for the floor shifter....
4. Bumper?

Well thats about it for now... I hope I dont bother you guys with all the questions!

Thanks,
Tyler

No question is a dumb question, Tyler... There are some performance parts available for the 240's, might want to consider driving it as is for awhile and then locate and rebuild either a 300-6 or a V-8 to replace it with as time and money permits....

Sounds like a nice truck, $800 IMO would be a good price for it...

Paint? Hmmm. anywhere from $1,000.00 to $10,000.00, how nice a job can you afford? I'm just finishing up the paint on my '71, two-tone done with base coat/clear coat. I have a bit over $800 in materials for the bodywork and paint....

Bucket seats? Spend some time searching the local salvage yards, should be able to come up with a nice set for $100.00 or less..

Bumper?? Again, try the salvage yards or the aftermarket companies, some of which advertise on here... I'd say anywhere from $25.00 for a use one to $350.00 for a fancy new chrome one...

Anyway, Welcome to FTE... Sounds like you're off to a good start... Just a bit of advice from a geezer who's been doing old Ford's for years... Don't take on too much at once,,,by that I mean rebuild the truck in steps. Some your age have been known to take everything apart down to the bare frame---and be overwhelmed by the cost and amout of time and work to put it all back together.... This will probably be your first truck, so enjoy driving it (sensibly so it lives awhile) and work on one part of the truck at a time... Oh yeah, and ask lots of questions, we've all been where you are now and made lots and lots of mistakes---maybe we can help you avoid some of our errors!!!!!!

Hey thanks for the comments guys!

Anyway I just finished today with my classroom part of drivers ED AND had my final exam and passed with an 87!! Now I need 6 hours of Behind the Wheel before my permit!

Anyway back on topic....

Dave thanks for the help! On the paint not looking for anything fancy just a basic coat of red paint and a clear coat. Bumpers I am not sure whether to go chrome or paint the bumpers quite yet? I would really like to get this thing in good condition with or with out a paint job so I can take it up to the Local Friday night cruise in!

I do have a couple more questions for you guys.

I realized that the truck has a 9-inch ford in the back! (Felt pretty dumb here!)
Anyway I would like to change the gear set in the center chunk to save a little gas and still be able to have a little get-up-and go.
Any suggestions on gear sets?
Can anybody lead me into the right direction?

That’s about all for now...

Thanks,
Tyler
