ok i just baught a 95 f-150 last week and took it out in the field to see how the 4x4 was workin cause i didn't have a chance to check it out real well when i baught her. but as soon an i finished a lil puddle section it was having a hard time staying running and finally stalled out with the clutch pushed in. it was a pit to get it running and then it was fine. i'm a boat diesel mechanic and haven't really toyed with gas since my dd is 2004 mustang mach 1 and under warranty. so if anyone has any help please i need input or subjestions. i was thinkin distributor, but that has a pound of permatex on it and no visual cracks. (i didn't put the permatex on it)
Welcome to FTE. I haven't heard of someone putting Permatex on a distributor cap before. It almost sounds like the previous owner might have run into the same problem you're having, and thought that gooping up the distributor cap with Permatex would solve the problem. I'd try drying out the cap with some WD40 or replacing it altogether. It wouldn't hurt to check your plug wires either.
just tried getting the cap off at work the past couple of days and no dice i'm going to have to pull the whole distributer. might as well just buy a new one with a coil, wires and plugs. man i hate timing gas engines. if diesel wasn't 5 dollars a gallon i prolly would have baught one.
If you can't get the cap off, you're going to have to reset the timing on the distributor and engine when you put the new one in.
It's not too difficult, just be certain you have a chiltons or a haynes manual and follow ALL the steps. It took me two miserable hours to do mine because I was missing a vital step that was on the back of the page, but once I finally found it, VROOM. Piece of cake. That and I felt kinda dumb for not just turning the page over initially to see if there were more steps. =P
i don't think it has anything to due with timing one of the at work had the same problem with his chevy (i forgive him for being a gm fan) he said it wound up being the cat and o2 sensor so i guess i will have to pick one up. thank god for military discounts and aftermarket parts but it's going to have to hold up till next pay day. i might even put an exhaust on too while i'm under there with the sawzall.
