I am a new Navi owner & traveling to Colorado to visit some family & friends later this week.. A friend wants to go on a few (beginner) trails with me.. I have never really done any type of trail going & I am looking for some advice on this from other Navi owners.. It will be all beginner type trails from what he mentioned.. Said that most stock 4x4's can make any of the trails that he's thinking about taking me on.. Mostly gravel with some small rocks & steep inclines that I will need to use the "Low range" of the transfer case.. It sounds like it should be a blast..
My Navi is a 2003 with the full air suspension, 4x4, advance-trac, tire pressure monitering system, with 3.73's & 275/65-18" BFG Rugged Trail T/A's..
Any advice that you can share to make this more relaxing & enjoyable would be greatly appreciated..
You shouldn't have any problems by your discription of the trails you'll be on, just be careful on steep side hills, these vehicles center of gravity is a little high but not bad. Also when going down hills let your engine do the majority of the braking by putting it in low gear so you don't over heat your brakes. And most of all, have fun.
Madsonp said it right. Your biggest threat will be downhills. Low Range 1st gear nice and easy and you will look like a champ. Air down for best traction. BFG Rugged trail tires arent the best, but when it is time come back on here to research which true off road tire is best for your type of wheelin...Have fun and be safe. Let us know how your first trip goes.
I have an 03 Navi too. My tip for ya is the truck raises an extra 1/2" when put in 4 low. What I do when going "wheelin" is keep it in 4 low the whole time (I assume this is mainly 20mph and less type trails) even though you don't need it necessarily to get the extra ground clearance. Watch your front plastic bumper - its pretty low, and take off your hitch cover or the ground will do it for you
