Question Quick Question about Alarms

I was looking into trying to get Remote Start put on my expy and the package includes an alarm....My only concern is that some people tell me I will loose use of my door pad entry system and some say it will be fine.. Does anyone know from firsthand if this is true or not?? Before I drop the money I want to know for sure you know. I use my door pad alot so couldn't afford to loose it in exchange for the Alarm/Remote Starter Setup.

Any advice/help is appreciated.

well either folks dont know or dont care. either way I'll guess I'll figure it out. Probably bigger issues on this forum about stuff breaking than my question anyway. no worries.

Most decent remote start/alarm/keyless entry systems have a negative input wire that will disable the alarm. This input wire will have to tie into the keypad system for it to work. However, since you will have a remote to open the doors, the keypad becomes kind of useless.

Oh and one little annoyance with those remote start/alarm systems is that the alarm has to be active in order to remote start the vehicle. That means that if your alarm is off and the doors are unlocked you cannot remote start the vehicle unless you first press the lock button on the remote.

That's not necessarily true, my alarm doesn't need to be active in order to use the remote start.

This is the system I have, it's a little pricey but it does everything. I still have the use of my pad system, but if the alarm is armed it'll go off when you open the door. My system is hooked up so I can lock/unlock the doors using the remote for the alarm which also arms and disables the alarm, so I have no need to use the pad.

I don't like carrying a lot of stuff in my pockets, so I usually leave the truck key and remote in the truck, and use the keypad only. I love that keypad, it was part of the reason I bought my Expy.

Anyways, when winter comes here in Alaska then yes, I do have to start carrying the remote starter control with me, but it has not disabled the keypad in any way.

I have a 2001 XLT.

re:

it depends pretty much how the techs wire up the systems. Is as designining a system, some do a good job some do a poor job.

I believe you will still be able to use that lock after an alarm has been wired up as long as it's independent and only triggers your solenoid on door.......

the only thing is you may have them just wire up glass sensor, proximity and shock but only locking of the foor doors with the exception of your drivers (which contains the lockpad)

That's my opinion.....yes it is going to be a complex wire up but if tech knows what he is doing, can be done....

Goodluck.

The door keypad will still work. If you have the alarm armed and use the keypad the alarm will go off as the keypad will not disarm the alarm system. Aftermarket alarms/remote start units don't tie directly into the individual door solenoids. They will connect to the same wires as the lock/unlock switch. How this is done depends on the vehicle.

The keypad and factor remote will still function if the disarm trigger of the alarm is connected to the factory unlock/disarm.

Truthfully that is the way it SHOULD be installed, especially in the case of a lost/broken remote.
