Drove my 66 around this weekend. The cracked dash is an eye sore. I don't have the funds to spring for a repop dash pad (too many other things going on). Anyone made their own dash pad, or have a upholstery shop make one? I pulled some black vinyl material out of my closet that looks like leather. Guess I could take my time getting the old pad out and use it as a template. Ideas?
If your going to remove your dashpad, you might want to remove your windshield first. By removing the windshield, you have the room to work you'll need a PLASTIC putty knife. I say plastic so you don't scratch up your dash. It might be awhile before you get the dashpad done and at least you can re-install windhield. If your lucky the installer of the dashpad wasn't glue happy. The glue is usually heaviest around air vent and speaker holes. No matter what take your time, Patients is the key here.
My son, Customcab66, we took off the old dash pad, it popped right off in one piece. He then stretched some black nagahide over the dashand is held down with the crome strips that held the pad in. I think it looks better than the original. I looked in his gallery, there was no pictures of it. I will talk to him this week when he gets home to see if he can post some of the dash.
I paid $350 at an upholstry shop for blue material to cover old pad.Matched the color of the seats. will post pics if not already in gallery. Installed it myself it was thicker than the original. A little difficult but worth it. Used wire ties to fasten it to the dash.
