hey guys, i got to thinkin about how i'm gonna do my 300 today, and came to the conclusion that i don't really know wat i want for pistons...i think that i've decided that i want to bore her over .030 and bolt on a head from a donor 240. is that going to put me where i want to be w/ compression or would u guys recommend more? perhaps a domed piston or something??
also, this truck is being built mostly for torque and pulling but it would be cool to have the ponies and rpm's to blow away a few guys on the streets too
Well, you didn't say where you wanted to be with the compression...vague....and what Blue Bomber said. For torque and pulling a low-mid range build. For blowing someone away a mid-high range build...not easy if even doeable to have the best of both ends.
welp, what i've got planned so far is 4 barrel carb w/ an offy intake and headers for starters...i'm gonna put a heavier cam in it, been looking around at comp but haven't decided for sure yet, but i do know i want roller rockers on her and i'm also planning on boring her over about .030". someday i'll install an aftermarket ignition system too, but not so high on my list of priorities for now...
like i wrote previously, i'm planning on installing the 240 head when i can procure one.
also to clarify, i would like motor to be built for torque, or well more torque than it already produces, this truck's eventually getting a small lift kit and do a little pulling when it's done. if there's anything in that lot that doesn't sound good or something that u might do different, plz post back...thanks guys!
An option to a flat top piston would be to zero deck the block and shave the head and use a hypereutectic stock dished type slug. While you are at it have a 3 angle valve job done, mild port and polish with manifold/head port match. Best check with your machinist as to how to achieve the cr you want. Unless you plan on using premium gas it's probably best to keep it no more than about 9.0. A comp 260H will move the power band up to about 3000 rpm for torque and 4500 pm for hp. For lower rpm the stock cam with Chebby rockers is not bad.
