Hi Everyone, I was towing a loaded car trailer this weekend (appx 10k) and my 05 diesel seemed sluggish from the start. I towed about 200 miles and it did ok, but on my way home, it started acting up. For the first 150 miles on the way home, it drove the same as it did going over(a little sluggish), but for the last 50 miles, if i stopped, I could barely get the truck rolling again. Off the stop, I would get going about 30 mph hour and the truck would not go any faster. I would burry the pedal in the floor and it would gradually speed up as if I was barely pressing the gas. The EGT's never exceeded 800 degrees and the boost would not go over 16 lbs. The engine would rev up to appx 3200 rpms and would shift, but the truck would never speed up. Once I would get it up to 60(which took forever), it was better, but not like it should be. Does anyone have any ideas of things I can look at before I take it into the dealership?
One more thing, when I got home, I took off the trailer and took it for a quick spin. I came off the stop and put my foot into it and she took off like a bat out of hell (boost went right up to 28ish like normal).
Is it a 5th wheel car hauler? I had the same problem with my gooseneck and there was an updated calibration. The only other thing I can think of is a sticking turbo.
No, it wasn't a fiver. It was just a bumper pull setup. i was wondering about the turbo, however the turbo is relatively new. They replaced the turbo and EGR valve about 15k miles ago and the truck has run awesome since(that was the only problem I've ever had with the truck).
Maybe it is a calibration issue. I guess I am going to be seeing the dealer shortly. Thanks for the thoughts.
I am really suprised to not see more people chiming in on this one.
The only other thing they did to mine was replace the cross over pipe behind the turbo. It was plugged solid not allowing the turbo to spool. I also had a CEL which was throwing a MAP/BARO correlation code. Dont know if you have that going on or not??
I don't know if they did that or not. That is a good place to start. That is what it seemed like was the turbo not spooling, but the truck never threw a code. I just found it weird that it spooled fine going up the pass and then when I was almost home, it wouldn't spool past 16lbs. thanks for the help Sarge, i'll look into that a bit.
I thought maybe the fuel filter too, but I only have about 5k on the filter. i am due for an oil change, but all other maintenance is current. Fuel filters are relatively cheap though, so it wouldn't hurt to try it just in case.
A couple of years ago we went to Maine on vacation. Changed oil, filters, fuel filters before leaving. Good idea right. Got most of the way to Maine. Started having power issues about 50 miles after a fuel fill at a small gas station. Limped home and pulled the primary filter on frame. It was full of junk and was cutting off fuel flow. Changed both filters and away we went with full power. I hope this is your problem.
I just recently had a problem like this...after an hour tow or so I would have no power and then my truck would stall like it ran out of gas. Twice to the shop on a TOW TRUCK and by the time it got there it fired right up...Turns out on the 3rd time it was the exhaust back pressure sensor...replaced it and no more problems soo far....Any of the same symptoms...you might check it? Good luck.
