A couple of weeks ago I had my 04 6.0 in for blowing some white smoke intermittently. Work done by my dealer under warranty. They changed EGR valve and the EGR cooler. Did some pressure tests and found no other leaks. Got the truck back and all seemed right until I had to pull my trailer last week. During the trip my cooling fan began to run and stayed on almost continueously for the whole trip. I used a lot more fuel than usual as well. An entire tank in 300km. It was pretty warm out on the trip, so I kind a chalked it up to the warm weather. On the way home from our camping trip yesterday, the weather was cool and cloudy for the return trip. Same thing...cooling fan on all the time and lacking power. Every so often the fan would shut off and I would get my power back. That would last 5 minutes and then the fan would start up again and I would lose power. I also checked my coolant and lots had boiled out through the cap on the resevoir. The truck had trouble even holding 100km/hr (or 60mi/hr). My trailer weighs about 8000 lbs and I've never had troubles pulling it before. The only time I've ever heard the cooling fan before was on a hot day pulling a mountain pass. I've pulled the trailer out camping a couple of weeks previous to this trip and never had any cooling or power loss issues.
I'll be taking it back to the dealer to sort this out. Has anyone got any ideas as to what they missed or is this a new problem.
I was towing our 37ft. 1/5th whl, the fan ran, the milage went to 5mpg, & loss in power. I had blown apart the inner cooler & scattered the turbo. That was at about 36,000 miles. It's completely stock & they replaced everything.
my first thought would be the thermostat is sticking. when i first started reading i had bad fan clutch in my head, then you stated that the fan turned off and resumed operating as normal. the thermostat could be sticking open so the coolant in the radiator doesn't have time to cool properly before getting pushed into the block. i could be way off but those are my thoughts.
Thanks, I would think that the dealer would have changed the stat since they had it apart anyway, but the last workorder doesn't show it as being replaced.
lets just hope that is the problem. whats messed up is that a lot of times the dealer overlooks the simple things and goes straight to the more complicated ones. especially if its under warranty cause they know you'll have to come back so they get paid twice.
My truck had the same issues: white smoke - dealer replaced EGR Cooler. Towing a 4500lb travel trailer the engine fan would come on and the truck would loose power. I noticed water dropplets on the outside of the degaus bottle. Turns out head gaskets were blown - dealer replaced oil cooler, head gaskets and degaus bottle.
he never mentioned anything about white smoke though. thats what leads me to thinking it's actually a cooling system problem.
In his first sentence he mentioned white smoke and the dealer replaced the egr cooler and egr valve on his truck. It just sounds like the exact same thing that happened to me last year. I went to two different dealers in town to get it fixed right.

Ford Country in the Henderson Valley Auto Mall has the good Diesel Techs. They always have a waiting list to get your truck in but it's well worth the wait. Gaudin Ford on Sahara has no wait.... for a reason. If I would have had ARP studs they would have installed them for me, I will be better prepared if there is a next time. Hope this helps.
