I have a couple of D60's I'm thinking about adding a LSD to(1 front,1 rear). I have ruled out lockers due to the type of driving I do, mostly heavy loads and snow driving some 4x4'n but not enough to worry about. I've been looking on-line, and the number of different types seems a little dizzying. Right now I'm looking at the Powr-lok type for the rear and maybe the trac-lok for the front. I don't want to have problems driving on the road with a load or sliding off of it in the snow, but I'm a little sick of having to put it in 4x4 because the one back wheel spins if I'm in a barn yard, wet grass, or some other mildly slick surface.
So what are your thoughts? Does this seem like a good idea, or is there a better option?
Best thing I can give right now are plans. The d60's are part of a truck I'm building to meet my needs.
So let's say 78-79 F250/350, SRW,460,zf 5speed. I don't tow a lot but I do tow about a handfull of times a year. I live in West Virginia so it's all mountains. As far as deep snow not really maybe 3-6" at a time on average. But when it snows I need my truck to get me to work and back so it will have to drive in the mountains. Most of my towing and heavy loads are done during the spring and summer months.
i have a dana 70 rear with a power lock, and a dana 60 front with a trac lock.i would not put a locker in the front diff again unless it was an air locker or an electric locker.i have found the its very hard on the front axle if the hubs are locked in and you are trying to turn hard.the truck seems to buck,or push instead.unless im under moderate throttle. it has made my driving style different at times.i usually lock in the passenger side hub,and unlock the driver side so i can turn sharp.then if i need the front pulling straight forward i re lock the driver side hub. its great if im off 4x4ing but in the snow or bad road conditions the front diff is to tight for street driving. an air or electric locker is a better deal for using as you need it i think. dont get me wrong the ls front diff works good, its just harsh to drive with the hubs locked in,unless its needed. thats where the air or elctric locker will come in very handy.
