8.8 replace or gear swap

Currently I have a 3.08 open and I want to go with a 4.10 lsd and Im looking for my best option. I have a shop near me that will install everything for me fr about $300 and I saw rebuild kits on bronco graveyard, one with duragrip lsd for $700, and one with trac-lok for $575. Or would I be better trying to find a limited slip diff with a 4.10 in it at the junkyard and have it rebuilt?

A junkyard unit will be cheaper, but it will be a friction disk type diff. In fact, it is the same as the trac-lok. Personally if I was going to spend the money, I would go with the Detroit True-Trac. It is an LSD with no clutch disks so it will basically not wear out. That kit is $725 from JBG.

I got a complete rear with stock lsd and 3.55s for $75. When I find a deal on some 4.10s or 4.56s, I'll grab those up and throw them in. I'm in for next to nothing at this point though other thana couple hours of work. I painted it and made it look good too. Everybody recognizes my silver diff cover.

You won't find a 4.10 truck 8.8 very easily in a junkyard. That ratio was only offered in Lightnings.

Didn't some explorers get them?

I would not hold my breath or go out of my way to find a complete axle, one from an Explorer will not fit, with a 4.10 ratio. Get a Trac-Loc carrier with whatever ratio you can find then change out the gears to 4.10. Rebuild the Trac-loc with carbon fiber friction plates ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-4700-c ).

Newer Mustangs use an 8.8 rear axle too. Lots of people upgrade to them, so there might be some in junkyard cars nearby or maybe someone on CL is looking to sell off an axle with them. Worth a look at least.

Trucks are a different spline count axle than Explorers and cars. Removing the gears off the diff and swapping onto a truck diff will work, but I'm not really sure it's worth all that effort. New gears aren't that expensive.

2011+ mustangs use 31 spline axles. Don't our trucks use the same?

Yes, but those won't have the ring on them that sends the signal to the speedo.

Gear sets are cheap enough to buy that unless your buying an entire 4.10 axle from an F150, it is better to buy new gears. I found Ford Racing ring and pinions on ebay not too long ago for ~$130 shipped brand new.

Ok so how hard is it to rebuild the trac lok. I can get a complete rear end for $100 out the junkyard and throw in the gears I want. I would love have the detroit true trac. I just dont know what would be the best option its either forking out the $1000 to have it done professionally or getting lucky and finding an axle that isnt complete destroyed and put it under my truck

I was just watching that. It doesn't seem hard at all. What is the hardest thing to do when rebuilding an 8.8?
