Whats up guys, I have a what I hope is a pretty easy question for you paint and body guys out there. I want to have my '79 F-150 sanded and primed (just for now), and along with a couple of rusted through places on the bed to be fixed and not with bondo. What I would like to know is how much is this going to cost me. Just a ballpark figure will do. If there are more questions just let me know but really I am looking for just a basic primer coat until I can afford to have the truck repainted and just to deal with the previous owners patch work, like spray painting black primer over original paint and formed surface rust areas.
Thanks in advance
Sorry - FAR from an easy question!!!
To estimate work on a car/truck, you need to know the condition of the current paint, the repair work needed, the size and amount of perforation rust work req'd.
As well, you don't want to leave it in primer for very long, if at all. It's generally porous so will not seal out moisture, causing more rust prior to paint. As for the rusted areas, one needs to determine how far the rust goes - adjacent seams/panels, frame, etc.
As for a BALL-PARK figure for sanding a 'clean' F150 with a DA in 220 to prep for primer = 12hrs. outside + 4 hours inside box. Prime with epoxy = 2hrs. (18 hrs x 80.00 shop rate = 1440.00, plus patchy areas needing feathering and Rust work and....)
Not sure if anyone could get closer than that - and that's a HUGE ballpark!!
