I just bought a 1974 Highboy, and really dont know anything about it...
I would really like to know what motor is in it? The vin says it has a 360ci, but the last owner says it has a 390ci. I also heard that it is really common for the motor to change from a 360 to a 390 come time to sell the truck!
I found some numbers just infront of the carb between the valve covers. C9AE9426-B
I researched it a little, and on a web site they had a chart to break it down, and i think so far it means: C= decade;1960's, 9= decade year;1969, A= car line;Galaxie, E= ford service part;engine... thats all i know
Anyways i know the truck has a NP 203 Transfer case, c-6 tranny, and "all time 4x4" The whole truck needs work but gotta know what i got before staring in....
you're right about when a vehicle is up for sale the owner would say it is a 390 instead of a 360. I'm pretty sure that no 4x4 truck had a 390 in it; they all came with 360s. unless it was swapped in.
this is a great site to research and ask questions about things. if you ever need any help just ask and one of these fine people will try to direct you in the right direction.
and if you have the VIN from the left door inside face post it and we can decode it for you.
Hey welcome to the site! The quickest way to tell what you have is by measuring the stroke. Take the #1 spark plug out and get the motor to top dead center (TDC). Insert a wooden dowel and make a mark. then get it to bottom dead center and make another mark. Then measure between the black marks, and thats your stroke. About 3.5"= 352/360 about 3.75"=390 about 4"= 410/428.
On the bottom pulley, where the timing marks are, 0 degrees is TDC. I dont know if there will be a bottom dead center mark, but it is when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke.
Congrats on the new purchase, these are great old trucks, as others have stated you'll need to measure the stroke to know if it's a 390 or 360, keep us posted.
Hey guys,
I measured the stroke on the truck and it is a 390... thats awesome, i sure didn't want the 360
Now i have to try and fix the front end. The truck is all time 4x4, and the front axle has been tore up, and at some point someone removed the axle shaft on the driver side! You can pull the cap at the end of the axle off, shine a light, and see clear through to the diff. Its hollow on one side. it also needs a new spider gear!
Should i go ahead sinse im working on the axle, put in the part time kit, and hubs, or what do you think?
