I don't usually rebuild them, I buy a lifetime warrenteed one from Autozone or Advance. Sometimes all they need are brushes but I am not sure whether they are soldered in or bolted in on these starters. A lot of the time they will also need new bushings/bearings or the windings break down from heat.
There are still a few places around that rebuild starters-- and I'd recommend that route if you think that you're getting robbed on the new ones.
If you search the net, you might find some rebuild advice, but this is one of those areas where the devil is in the details. It takes experience and specialized tools to do it right -- not to mention finding the parts.
BTW if you have a particular vehicle that eats starters, you might look at the vehicle itself. Is there something screwed up with the starter mounting holes that might cause the starter to bind -- stuff like that. Or are you banging them up by off roading?
I've tried a couple chain auto parts store starters with warranties, but got fed up changing them out. Went to the Ford dealership and bought a reman there. Said they didn't sell new anymore. Never a problem since and it's been four years. Still have a brand new reman NAPA starter sitting on the bench that I got from the lifetime warrantee.
I am on number 3 in the last 2 months and I hardly drive the darn thing. However I have been swaping some ones I had laying in the garage from scrapped cars. the one I have in now is one out of a torino from behind a cleveland. BTW 302's,351c,351w are all interchangeable maybe even the inline sixes.
