I don't have part numbers for you, but yes it is different. One harness works for the overhead and the clearance lights, and connects to the plug in the passenger side kick panel. If you already have the overhead, the place you need to plug the clearance light harness is already taken. That's not to say you could not wire something up on your own. You could do that. But it's easiest to just get the correct harness.
Sure you could. You will want the harness dedicated to the cab lights, because it has all the five connectors to the lamp bases, plus it has all the plastic tacks to attach it to the sheet metal. But you could pull the harness that goes to the overhead and just tap the wires down in the kick panel. That's basically what I did, although my overhead is a retro-fit so I had no choice. I think it would be worth the few dollars for the correct harness, but that's just me and I like a nice OEM installation whenever possible.
Oh I agree about the oem look. I think it shows you take your time to make things fit and look more presentable. I am just shopping right now. How hard is it to take that overhead down so I can drop the headliner?
I have a different one. Mine is actually a pull-out of an F150, so it's a little different. But it's similar too. It is just held up there by clips and you just pull down on it. Mine has a screw in the very front, right next to the windshield. So look around on yours for a screw, but I don't think you will find one. Then just pull straight down on it. It will take some effort but it will pull down.
Then just pull the front of the head liner down. You don't have to take it all the way out.
Wow I'm glad I read this thread! I was just ready to purchase some cab lights and I have the overhead console. The part number I have for the harness is 1C3Z-15A404-AA. Anyone know if that is for an overhead console or not?
Don't buy anything yet..... Let me see what I can find out. The pt# you have is half the price of the pt# I have. If it looks like I can get away with using the cheeper one and splicing in to the wire like I did on a buddies 99 SD I am going to go that route.
Ok here is what I found out. The part number I have for the harness is correct. What it says it does is that it plugs into the lights and then it plugs into the overhead console. Now I don't understand why it costs twice as much as the non console harness. I might just buy that one and splice it in behind the kick pannel.
FYI, I'm thinking the harness will be different for various truck years. That's because Ford put different functions in the overhead over the years. For example, the '06 overhead has nothing but convenience lights in the overhead, so there are no PCM function wires in the kick panel. Whereas a MY 2002 truck would have all the wires in the kick panel necessary to calculate MPG, MTE, temp, etc. So it makes sense that the number of wires in the harness will vary as well. You guys that are looking for the harness p/n, make sure you work with the correct model year.
