Blocked off EGR

I'm fairly new to the diesel scene and was wondering what the following means: blocked off egr cooler and EGR delete

EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation. There is an up pipe coming from the exhaust to the turbo and part of the exhaust is routed to the intake through a valve. Because the exhaust is so hot and they want to cool it down before going into the intake they send it through a cooler first that has coolant from the radiator going through it. There is a modification that lets you put in an up pipe that will block off the exahaust so that it can no longer go through the cooler. The end of the cooler should be blocked off as well and a chip is sometimes required to prevent a code from occuring should the sensors see a lack of egr flow.

that being said why would anyone want to do this. Cooler air to the turbo is good.

the exhaust isn't routed back through the turbo, it is put directly into the intake, people block it off since the egr coolers are known to be problematic, when they fail they can cause the coolant to boil and you start blowing coolant out of the degas bottle and leaking coolant into the motor. Blocking it prevents the gases from entering the cooler and generally is all you would need to do, on your truck you have a scoop in the up pipe directing the exhaust flow more towards the egr cooler, so you would need to replace the up pipe as well. Deleting it entirely, is more work then necessary for most of us.

Hi - EGR issues - Read the TECH FOLDER - see top of list 'READ FIRST 6.0 tech folder'. The first tech subject is all you ever need to know about the EGR issues with the 6.0. I spent days reading all that and about other tech issues The basic mods we may want to do to these trucks, its all there. I learned more on this forum and the tech folder then any other Ford site I have been to. Enjoy

On the intake (compressor) side this may be true. On the exhaust (turbine) side you want hot exhaust to spool the turbo.

Doing the EGR-up pipe mod is easy enough just get some 1.5" steel round stock and weld it in place. Now the entire EGR delete is a different animal....

Where exactly do I need to weld this 1.5" round stock?

You do know to remove the up-pipe from the right side manifold? Lots of pictures in the tech folder and in my picture album.

I used a washer - grind to fit - drop into the flange inside below the mating surface. Welded in place an welded the hole shut -
There is a recess inside the flange - I set the washer on that. It is about 1/8 inside the mating of the flange.
I now have the dummy EGRv spool from ebay $60 in place of the EGRv so I now have a true closed off EGR cooler system - no chance of a heat related problem. Hopefully the water filter will keep the internal radiator from getting a leak
The full delete was too much to take on at this time.
