The manual for my '94 Ranger says to use 90 wt. oil in the differential. (It's a 7.5 in. differ.) Around here noone seems to be selling straight 90 wt. oil anymore. They have 85-140W and 80-90W. Which is the better one to substitute for 90W? Or does it matter? Thanks.
I'm crfarley and I have a 2000 4.0, 2wd, and a limited slip differential. I noticed, when my son was driving out the road, a humming noise from the rear end. I was in our yard. You couldn't hear the engine. One neighbor said he heard the noise and said he had a similar problem and the whole rear end dropped out of his vehicle. Any help or ideas?
crfarley, it could be alot of things. Check for brake drag, the limited slip needs a special additive in the fluid too. The brakes may be making the noise....nt the rear end.
I had the rear brakes worked on a couple of weeks ago and that did not solve the problem. Some think that something had slipped in the differntial. Some think that it is a problem with the O-ring and bearings. Possible rebuild. I'm having it checked starting today. I'll let you know how things turn out. Thanks for your input. crfarley
