Recently noticed that my gas gauge isnt really working the right way. I looked @ the gauge on the way to work and I had a little more than half a tank when leaving work and turning on the car the meter read Full. After driving a few miles home it went down to a quarter tank and then back up to full and back to quarter and when I reached home it read half. I was told by a fellow coworker/Ford owner that it could be the floater. What do you guys think? thanks
I have a similar problem on my 01 Ranger. My truck will create it's own fuel. I'll start out with a half a tank, and by the time I get to my destination I'll be reading full. I know it's the sending unit on the fuel pump because I'm getting an error code of P0460 which translates to "Fuel level sensor A circuit Malfunction". I'll be changing out the fuel pump when I go on vacation in October.
I tried using the Chevron "Techron Concentrate Plus" in my fuel tank to clean up any sulfur deposits on the sensor, and it worked for a while then the problem started again. I'm going to run another 20 ounces of it on my next fill up just to see if it makes any difference.
Are you getting any error codes when your gauge hunts? Maybe in your case it's just the float that needs replacing. Try the Techron product for starters. It's an easy and cheap way to begin troubleshooting the problem.
When your check engine light comes on a code is held in the computer module. To access the code you need to hook up a code scanner/reader to the data terminal under the dash. You can take the truck to AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts for a free code check if you don't have a scanner.
