temperature gauge fluctuation
need some help, this problem is driving me crazy. temperature gauge reads normal when the heater is off. when I turn on the heater the gauge will rise to over 1/2 then fall rapidly to the beginning of the gauge arc (cold). this process happens over and over again, only wioth the heat on. have put in three thermostats, raditor cap, and lower radiator hose. need some help on this one.

What type of vehicle do you have? I have an 86 f-150 with a 300 and the same exact thing happened to me. I bought a new radiator and it helped but still did it. It is probably the water pump. Does it leak any antifreeze?

Try it with the fan running and the heat off and see if it still happens.
With the heater/fan running, I would check the instrutment voltage regulator (with a meter), the (+) at the battery, and my ground connections. Especially the cab ground.
