A/C Questions

Ok...Its been a while since I have posted but I am back now and have some questions about my a/c in my 90 Bronco 5.0.

First, I bought the conversion kit(R12 to 134A) from my local parts store. Nothing more than the conversion valves. Rest of the system is original.

Second, I did have all the R12 taken out. Then we put a vacum on for 30 to 40 min to get out all the moisture. Now my questions...

How many cans of 134A should it take to fill my system?(I bought 5 and a small can of the stop leak plus red dye). I put in 4 cans of refrigerant and the compressor will come on for a few seconds then right back off again. I did not add any oil yet.

How many cans of oil should I put in? I do have all the gauges, hi and low pressure, to have all the measurements.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Is your sticker on the core support still it tells how much freon to put in. With 134A you add 80 percent of what the original charge was. I would only add an ounce of oil if you left the oil in the compressor.

Where is the core support? We looked and looked for a sticker for that information and could not find it. Would the oil be the cause of the compressor coming on and then going off after just a second or 2?

You have to adjust the pressure switch or if yours isn't adjustable get one that can
take a higher pressure. That's why it is cycling on and off.

I havnt done the change on mine yet, so I cant speak for experience, but i've read on several forums that you also need to change the orfice valve.

Ok, We put the gauges on and the low pressure side is reading about 40psi and rising as the compressor is off and once it kicks in the pressure drops down to about 25psi. Pressure rises again and the compressor will kick in then pressure drops and compressor shuts off. As I add a can of refrigerant the pressure shoots up to over 100psi but as soon as the can was added it went back down to the same pressure as before. can't find any leaks anywhere. No red dye anywhere at all. Any help with what might be going on would be great.

do you have high side gauge?
Sounds like its just low on freon still, but if theres a clog in the system it will show too much pressure on high side and a low suction.

Just for info I swapped in a sanden compressor some years ago and had all new hoses built for the truck to fit the compressor. We bought the orfice tube or hot gas line, accumulater, and pressure switch from ford and its all original parts meant for r12 then we used 134A just cause its what we had and what the compressor called for. It has always worked like a top and puts out 35 degree air out the vents.
I aways had people tell me that you have to use a 134A pressure switch but mine always cycled normaly.
