Yeah, you're lucky in Maryland. There are places in Texas that will inspect it and it will pass. He just has to find one in his county and he's golden.

well i'll be on the hunt then! i love the sound of the straight pipe to much to put a muff back on.
When I lived in California I had a Mustang that wouldn't pass their smog inspection. I always found a place that would give me a "hot smog" and pay them.

Most don't. Again it all goes back to the shop where they get their trucks inspected. Some places take their work waaaaaaay to seriously and hassle customers about everything. Other shops don't care, they just take the money and slap a sticker on your windshield.
To give you an example. Years ago I bought a Firebird Formula 350 right out of high school (born, raised, and lived most of my life in Texas). The exhaust had been modified, but the tips weren't welded on the pipes properly. These tips mind you were post muffler sticking out from the rear bumper. However, I took my car into an inspection shop and they 'suspected' an exhaust leak. They completely plugged up my tailpipes to try and make the engine die. The car kept running because of the leaks at the tip welds, so they said my car failed inspection because I have an exhaust leak. I tried to argue with them that it was post muffler, and that I could cut the pipes off there and it wouldn't make a difference concerning Texas state law. They didn't care what I had to say. The failed me then wanted to charge hundreds of dollars to replace my entire exhaust system from manifolds to tailpipe. I knew they were trying to drum up a dummy sale, said f#%k you and left. Went to another shop that day and they glanced at my car, asked me if everything worked, and gave me the sticker.
My uncle has a 9 second Grand National that is definitely NOT street legal. Yet every year he manages to get that sticker and drives it to work on occasion.
Now, what really sucks about Colorado is I live in a county where emissions testing is required. For gas powered vehicles, they are inspected once every 2 years, and the inspection fee is $25. This is for a very lengthy emissions test including an OBD-II scan for emissions related problems. If you drive a diesel, you must be tested EVERY YEAR at a price of $55-$75 depending on the shop. The test is just a quick opacity and snap test, and you're done. Definitely not fair to diesel owners It's a quicker and easier test, cost 2-3 times more, and it must be done yearly

I paid $45 at the place I went. Kind of a greasy hole in the wall place, but, ?
The inspection lady gave me ***** about "barely" passing, but I hear through the diesel grapevine that everyone passes there.
I think you might be worrying to much Glenn. When is the last time someone looked under your truck during an inspection? I had mine inspected a few months ago and they never peeked under the truck.
