Trying to decide between the Vortex or the Extreme. I see the vortex comes in a "kit" where the Extreme is a replacement muffler. Anyone have either of these? Anyone have any thoughts on the sound? I've heard the vortex on other trucks and I liked it.
i have the cherrybomb extreme muffler on my ford. it sounds great.
loud at idle then when your transmission gets into overdrive it isn't much louder than stock. no popping/crackling at all
the votex and extreme are complete opposites when it comes to sound. the votex will be quiet while the extreme will be just about the loudest you can get before messin with the cat and running straight pipe. With these trucks no matter what you do dont expect your truck to be super loud cause it wont with the cats that are on these trucks.
I don't want anything too outrageous. How is the interior drone with the Extreme? Also what configuration did you get and would yours be the same as mine? I haven't gotten under the truck to see which muffler to get.
the only drone i really hear is right at 40 mph then when you get to 45 the drone stops.
i have the stock cats, stock inlet pipe, and stock outlet tail pipe. i just cut the muffler off and welded the extreme muffler in. i had to use something like 15 inches of tubing to connect the extreme muffler to the stock tail pipe since the extreme muffler is half the size of the stock muffler.
the truck is loud but nothing like a F150 or a mustang would be with the same muffler.
here is a clip of a V10 that sounds similar to my 5.4, this one is a little louder than mine since his exits in front of the wheels while mine is in the stock location though.
i have the one where the muffler body is 6 inches in length total, so 12" total due to the 3 inch couplers on each side. i think the number is 7428
when you see the muffler it looks like a toy though cause it is so small. lol
i went with the center inlet/center outlet while the stock muffler is like offset/offset or offset/center (something like that) i ended up pulling the stock tailpipe down to match the center/center muffler. it only brought the tailpipe exit upward just a little but no where in danger of hurting the paint on the fender of the truck.
while the offset/offset of the 3.5" inlet/outlet muffler would be better fitment i didn't feel like getting 3 to 3.5" reducers (well increasers) then welding them when i could just pull the factory tailpipe down to fit my needs. plus with the bigger muffler body it would be quieter (dont know how much though) and a it was a few bucks cheaper too going with the one did.
if you are doing it yourself or need a place to order one, i had it shipped to my doors in 2 days for 65 bucks total. there was another site that gave free shipping but their online ordering was down and i didn't feel like waiting another day so i went with jegs.
here is a pic of the outlet of the muffler to the new filler pipe and to the factory tailpipe.
oh i painted the whole exhaust black but the muffler will be gray in color. as for the wierd looking hanger i never checked side to side motion the on exhaust system just up and down before painting. so i needed to make something to help without messing up my paint job so i just grabbed a 3" exhaust clamp from autozone and cut the stock muffler hanger off the stock muffler. then drilled two holes so i could run the exhaust clamp into it. fixed it without ruining my paint.
kinda difficult to see but the stock tailpipe is elevated a little bit.
