7 Grand seems pretty good, when I seen it I seem to remember it was in really nice shape.
Since I didn`t buy the 83 new all I say is that it was showing 96,xxx kms when I bought it and now has 03,xxx kms.
It looked and acted like a low mileage car so I believe that was the actual mileage.
little more thought gone into it Dustin, its better i lease a brand new '08 than buy that '06... i'm doing some math and might end up keeping things the way they are unless i can sell the s'crew privately...
for a self employed person, leasing is the best way to go. the lease payment is a total write off vs a purchase, the vehicle gets depreciated. for me, a least would mean an additional 2500-3000/year write off on my taxes... if you think about what that would save you, thats the way to go.
Well Im too lazy to do the math for it right now, but lets say a person leases a truck over 5 years. At the end of the 5 years you have no truck at all to show for it.
So a person pays 3 grand a year (that doesnt sound right, isnt it more like 6-800 bucks a month?) and it is a write off bringing your total income down a little, saving you a little money on your taxes (meaning ya dont have to pay an extra maybe 1000 bucks?) but at the end of those 5 years you still have no truck! Your now stuck in the leasing loop!
I know you get a new truck that way, and I know all about depreciation too, it sucks.
I myself would personally go used, you can still write off the truck as a business expense (I know I can with my backhoe business, I cant see why you wouldnt be able to either) the truck works and pays for itself (hopefully) in the 5 years a guy pays for it (or just pay for it cash like I chose to) and then at the end of those 5 years you still have a truck to show for it!
It may get some km/s on it, get beat up a little and show that it has done some work, but isnt that what a truck is all about?
Now Im not trying to tell ya what to do, just picking your brain, seeing what the numbers come up as, and, well, discussing
Also curious, why are ya now trying to sell your 83? Seen it on kijiji, and you mentioned upgrading to something different...?
I have leased a couple vehicles in the past - some deals were better - some worse. At one time I was getting a new vehicle every one, two, or three years (one was an exception) and the purchase was slightly better. However, with the depreciation on new being so ridiculous now, I will definitely crunch lease numbers again. I will use my brother as an example - he bought his Dmax and his wife bought her Envoy but him and his business partner leased new company vehicles - we havent had time to talk about how the numbers went on that but I will check into it. Lease payments are lower than purchase payments. At the 3 year mark or so on new vehicles, if you finance the entire amount, you owe more than they are worth!! Three of my friends found this out - one was a F350, one an F150, and one a Chevy 4x4 - all were owing more at the three year mark than the vehicles were worth!! The numbers get better in the last two years (assuming 5 year financing) but somehow those vehicles usually end up needing some money on repairs by then!
I know the newer vehicles are not for everyone, but we live 3/4 of an hour from everywhere and almost every vehicle here sees 40000 km per year!
If you buy the extra mileage ahead of time its not as bad. Ward bought his Dmax with 20000 or so km on it said it was good deal. I have always bought new but with another crop failure looming and poor cattle prices, its another year of nothing here for me! If it doesnt rain, it will take a few years of digging to get the hole filled in - I should have retired at 40 when I could have afforded to - instead I will end up working forever!
Sheldon, I will probably buy a year or two old Dmax when its time - those big expensive trucks really take a hit so I will let someone take it in the 'nads and go with that. There is good warranty on all the diesels so used isnt too risky that way!
leasing = lower payment up front vs buying, total write-off vs depreciation, new truck for similar payments of a 2-3 year old truck with miles on it... at the the end of 3 years, (no 5 year lease is possible), you have the option of buying a truck that you've owned since new for 16-18g...or roll into a brand new truck without having to worry about selling the old one. sure there's cons too, but more pros than cons for me in leasing.
yeah the '83 and the s'crew is up for sale. which ever one goes gets replaced with a 4x4. the 83 is an awesome driver, but i have 2-2wds and i'm getting sick of spinning through the winter, and i don't have space for 3 trucks, nor the time for them. have i justified myself yet dear??
